You need to install a number of programs for Applications and the PPP
protocol to work properly.
Trumpet Winsock is used to dial in using the PPP protocol.
Get the software at ftp://ftp.trumpet.com/winsock/twsk30d.exe
The software is shareware and the trial period is 30 days, costs $25.
Microsoft has software for configuring custimized dialup for CCIL which is freely available, but it only seemed to work somewhere between 50% - 80% of the time.
CCIL would be allowed to redistribute it if we say that Microsoft Explorer is our preferred browser and include Microsoft Explorer. The package will fit on about 8 floppies, yet netscape is better.
The minimal cofiguration information needed is: (probably needs work) Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Domain ccil.org DNS 192.190.237.103 2nd DNS 192.190.237.106 PPP box checked. If your are setting up SMTP or POP mail, use mail.ccil.org for your configuration.
The most popular browser Netscape Communicater is available at ftp://ftp5.netscape.com/pub/communicater/, and can be long downloads. Older smaller versions can used in less powerful machines. They are available at ftp://ftp5.netscape.com/pub/navigator/3.04/shipping/english/windows/windows3.1/. and ftp://archive:oldies@archive.netscape.com/archive/navigator/2.02/windows/n16e202.exe,
Net Term, a telnet client is available at ftp://www.neosoft.com/pub/users/z/zkrr01/nt16428.exe
Using the links in the PPP Web Page, download Winsock3 and Netscape files first to CCIL, and then to your own PC. These are self-extracting, compressed files and their names will seem to be random alphanumeric characters (not Winsock and Netscape); if the extensions are not .EXE, rename the files to have .EXE extensions. Move these files to directories named Winsock and Netscape, respectively. Go into Windows3.1 and run each of these files; then run the INSTALL.EXE file in the Winsock directory. Still in Windows3.1, double click on the Trumpet icons in both the Program Manager and Trumpet Group windows to display the Winsock window. Drop the File menu, select SETUP and enter info:
Leave the IP address field blank. This will be automatically set each time you dial in. DNS Server(s): 192.190.237.103 192.190.237.106 ---Yes, you need the space between the two sets of numbers--- Domain Suffix: ccil.orgThen, press OK and this time select 'PPP Options' from the File menu
Place a check in 'Use PAP Protocol' and enter in your CCIL username and password in the appropriate fields.Don't worry -- you're almost there. Now press OK and select 'Edit Scripts' from the Dialler menu (yes, we know it is spelled wrong)
status Connected. Now logging in as $username...
You will need to delete everything after, but not including, this line.
Save the file and you are almost ready to go.
This leaves only one last problem: Your computer doesn't know what number to dial!
To solve this, select 'Profile' from the Dialler menu.
Input 6104312839 (the main CCIL system number) into the 'Phone' field, but DO NOT enter in your username and password here. It already has it and doesn't need it twice.
Press the 'Modem Settings' button and click the 'Hardware (DTR) hangup' field and press OK (this works better for hanging up the modem when you're finished)
Press OK and you should now be set up to connect to CCIL's network and to the Internet.
The manual login procedures will no longer work with CCIL's system. The process has been fully automated, so all you need to do is select LOGIN from the DIALLER menu.
AUTOMATIC LOGIN
The script file supplied with Winsock will now work with the CCIL login protocol. You do not need to edit the script further. To run the script, go in to Windows3.1, double click the Winsock icons in the Program Manager and Winsock Group windows, drop the DIALLER menu and select LOGIN.
Applications section to be completed. Will include Pegasus mail, Netscape, Mosaic and Net Term.
