Approximate time to set up:
4 Minutes
From the Windows desktop, right-click My Network Places, and select Properties. A window that looks like the following should appear (You may or may not have the "Local Area Connection" icon on your computer. Either way is fine.)

Double-click on the Make New Connection icon.
In the Network Connection Wizard, click Next on the first page and select Dial-up to the Internet (as shown below) and click Next.

The Internet Connection Wizard should now start automatically.
Select the third option in the list ("I want to set up my Internet connection manually...) and click Next.

From the next window, select the option I connect through a phone line and a modem and click Next.
If your modem is not properly set up, the Add New Hardware Wizard will now start. You must have a modem properly installed and configured in your computer in order to proceed.
If your modem is already set up and configured properly, the following window will appear:

You will need to enter in the access number for your area. See the Access Listing page for a complete listing of our current access numbers.
Also make sure that the Use area code and dialing rules option is checked, since 10-digit dialing is required in the 610/484 area codes.
Click Next, and you will be prompted to enter in your CCIL username and password. Note that your computer will NOT attempt to connect to the internet at the current point.
After clicking Next, you will be prompted to enter in a name for this connection so you can easily identify it in the future. Most users call it simply "CCIL", however you may name it whatever you want.
At the next screen, you will be prompted if you want Windows to automatically configure
Outlook Express as your CCIL email client. CCIL does not endorse any specific email client, as our services are compaitble with almost every email reader available. However if you wish to use
Microsoft Outlook Express, you may do so by selecting
Yes at this screen. If you select Yes, you will be asked a few simple questions regarding your personal contact information.
No matter what email reader you select to use, the following information will be asked for at some point during the setup process:
- POP3 or IMAP (Incoming Mail) server: mail.ccil.org
- Mail Server Type: mail.ccil.org supports both POP3 and IMAP.
- SMTP (Outgoing Mail) server: smtp.ccil.org
If you have not done so already, you must configure your computer for the 610/484 area code rules. To do this, select
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, and double-click on the
Phone and Modem Options icon. A window that looks similar to the following should appear:
Select the 610 area code (or 484, depending on your telephone number) line and click on the
Edit button. Select the
Area Code Rules tab at the top. If the rules window is blank, then you will need to add one to force your computer to include the area code when calling CCIL. You can do this by clicking on the
New button. Fill out the options as shown in the following window:
Make sure that the
Include this area code option at the bottom is checked. You can then press the
OK buttons on the open windows to close out the Phone and Modem Options windows. (You should only have to click 3 OK buttons).
Your connection is now set up.
If you wish to create a shortcut to the CCIL connection on your desktop, right-click on the CCIL connection in the
Network and Dial-up Connections window and select
Create Shortcut. When you are asked if you want the shortcut placed on the desktop, select
Yes. Whenever you want to connect to the internet from now on, all you need to do is double-click on the CCIL icon that was placed on the desktop.
The following clients will work with your new connection:
- Netscape Communicator
- Internet Explorer
- IRC
- Microsoft Exchange/Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express
- Eudora Light/Eudora Pro
- AOL for Windows (Select TCP/IP instead of your modem as the connection device)
- Any other application designed to work across a standard internet connection
