Setting up an Internet connection (aka PPP) under Mac OS 8.x and 9
Approximate time to set up: 4 Minutes
These directions are brief, so you may still want to consult your user manual for your particular system.
Modem Setup
If you're modem is already set up you can safely skip this step.
- Go to the Apple Menu (upper left corner of your screen)
- Choose "Control Panels"
- Choose "Modem Control Panel"
- Select the "Connect via" pop-up menu and choose the port to, which
your modem is connect (usually the Modem Port is defaulted)
- Set the sound to "On"
- Set the Dialing to "Tone"
- Click the close box when you are done (upper left corner of window)
Setting up your TCP/IP Properties
- Go to the Apple Menu again
- Select Control Panels, then TCP/IP Control Panel
- Select "Connect via" pop-up menu, then choose PPP.
- Select Configure pop-up menu and choose Using PPP Server
- In the Name server address, type 192.190.237.106 and
192.190.237.103
- In the search domains type in: ccil.org
- When you are done click the close box
- If a dialog comes up asking your if you want to save, click "Save"
Setting up your PPP Properties
- Apple Menu, select PPP Control Panel
- Select Registered User
- Enter your CCIL username
- Enter your CCIL password
- Enter the CCIL phone you wish to use (probably 610-431-2839)
- Select "Options..." (A new window will appear)
- Select Connection Options Tab
- Check "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP application,"
if this is the behavior you want, otherwise leave it unchecked and connect manually.
- Select "Protocol Option"
- Check "Allow error correction and compression in modem"
- Check "Use TCP header compression"
- Make sure "Use terminal window" is not checked
- Click "Ok" to close the options window
- Click on the "Connect" to test your configuration now
Or click the close window box to save your settings
You should now connect automatically to CCIL every-time you wish to connect to the Internet, when you start Netscape, IE, or any other program requiring an Internet Connection, if you chose "Connect automatically...".
iMac Setup w/ Internet Setup Assistant
Connect with an iMac is even easier, because you can use the "Internet Setup Assistant" bundled with your iMac.
- Double-click on your Hard Drive icon, then look for the folder "Internet Folder"
- Access the Internet Setup Wizard
- Double-click "Internet Setup Assistant"
- On the "Welcome" screen, click the "Yes" button
- On the "Internet Account" screen, click the "Yes" button
- Click the right arrow button on the lower right hand corner of
the "Introduction" screen
- On the "Configuration name and connection screen" type:
CCIL-PPP
- Also make sure the "Modem" radio button is selected
- Click the right arrow button
- On the "Modem settings" making sure "Tone" is selected
- On the "Configuration information" screen fill the following
information:
- The CCIL number you wish to connect to (probably 610-431-2839)
- Your CCIL username and password if you are the only CCIL user in your household
- Leave the username and password fields blank if you share this computer with other CCIL users
- Click the right arrow button located on the lower right-hand corner of the screen
- On the "PPP connect scripts" screen, be sure the "No" radio button is selected (note: this is a change from the old system)
- For the "IP Address" screen, select the "No" radio button
- In the DNS address box, enter (192.190.237.106 as primary, 192.190.237.103 as secondary)
- For the Domain Name (or host name) field, enter ccil.org
- Click the right arrow button
- For the "Email address and password" screen, enter your CCIL email address and password (again if you share this machine you may want to leave these blank)
- Click the right arrow button
- On the "Email account and host computer" screen enter your-ccil-username@mail.ccil.org
- In the e-mail host box, type "mail.ccil.org"
- Click the right arrow button
- For the NTTP field, enter news.ccil.org
- Click right arrow to continue
- For the Proxy settings, click "No"
- Click right arrow for the final screen
- Click the "Go Ahead" button, and you are ready to connect to CCIL
