About InterLink

Note to users as of 8/19/06 - Some of this information is out of date and needs to be rewritten.

Interlink is the program written by the city wizards and automatically run by the computers at the CCIL office when you log onto CCIL. The interlink program handles the basic user files and all aspects of the "olde city" menu system. To put it metaphorically, consider the Interlink program CCIL's text-only version of Windows. Do not confuse the functions of PINE, PICO, lynx, ftp, irc, etc. with Interlink, however. These are independent programs themselves run by Interlink.

Time Quotas

How does my quota work?

Normal CCIL citizens are allotted with 120 minutes from 1:00am to 3:00pm (off peak hours). The time left-over after the 120 min. period ends is halved (returning it proportionally to the 60 min. standard). On weekends, however, the daily on-line time remains 60 min. Daily on-line time is reallotted by the Interlink program each day around 12:30pm. However, a flaw in the system clock causes it to grow less accurate over time.

Also, be aware that due to an aged bug (unlikely to ever be corrected) in the Interlink program, a user who is logged on during the 12:30pm reset period will unfortunately not receive the next day's time allotment.

How can I get additional online time?

Additional on-line time is something which is generally relative to the load and magnitude of volunteer work you perform. If the amount of time you have on-line becomes a problem contact Volunteer Development, vols@ccil.org, to discuss the possibility of receiving additional on-line time.

Home menu problems

Why is my home menu now a tourist menu?

You've most likely deleted your "home.layout" file. See the next question on what to do if you've deleted your "home.layout" file.

I've deleted my "home.layout" file!! What do I do?!

No problem unless you've customized your "home.layout" menu. First, go to the town hall by typing [!townhall]. Next, choose option [a] from the menu to "change your residence." Finally choose your previous residence, which is most likely Random Avenue, option [r]. You will now see the message: "Your home has been customized. Are you sure you want to overwrite it?" Press [y] followed by return. The Interlink program will now create a new "home.layout" file for you. The change will be apparent the next time you logon to CCIL.

Files and Diskspace

Is there a limit to the amount of diskspace I can use on CCIL?

Currently there is no limit placed on the overall size of your directories. We do ask that you try to limit yourself to a maximum of 10 MB please. Although we do not police this policy, please be mindful of of your disk usage as it effects all other CCIL citizens directly.

How do I download a file?

First go to your tools menu by typing [!tools]. Next, choose option [d] to download a file from your diskspace on CCIL. Here you will be prompted for a file name. To download your directory with all it's files enter "/usr2/home/username" without the quotation marks. To download subdirectories within your home directory, download "/usr2/home/username/directory", again without the quotation marks.

How do I upload a file?

First go to your tools menu by typing [!tools]. Next, choose option [u] to upload a file from your home computer to your diskspace on CCIL. You must now tell the Comm program you are using to send the file. To confirm the upload operation, start CDIRED by choosing option [b] from your tools menu. Within the list of resulting files your should see the newly added file name.

Talk Messages

If you ever receive the following text while using CCIL, you've been requested for a talk session by another CCIL user.

Message from Talk_Daemon@locke.ccil.org at 17:12 ...
talk: connection requested by username@locke.ccil.org.
talk: respond with talk username@locke.ccil.org

To initiate the talk session go to the pit area (type [!pit] ) and choose option [t]. The screen will be divided into an upper and lower section. The upper division will be where you type and the lower division will be what the other user has typed.

To end a talk session press the [delete] (break) key.

If you want to deny any and all talk session interruptions you can disable the option. Note, however, that this is not a permanent change. Each time you log onto CCIL you will have to make the change. To do this go to the pit area (type [!pit] ) and choose option [m].
